Pelosi Remarks at 2021 California Democratic Party
Virtual Convention

San Francisco – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today delivered the following remarks at the 2021 California Democratic Party Virtual Convention.

Speaker Pelosi. Greetings, California Democrats!

As former chair of the California Democratic Party, it is my personal honor to join you virtually at this year’s convention to celebrate California Strong. As Speaker of the House, it is my privilege to bring to you the gratitude of our magnificent House Democratic Majority that is over 60 percent women, LGBTQ and people of color.

And it is with pleasure that I bring you greetings from your entire California Democratic Congressional delegation that you helped elect and protect in the 2020 election!

Thanks to the extraordinary hard work of our VIPs – our Volunteers In Politics – Democrats Held The House, took back the White House, and flipped the Senate. Because of your hard work, we celebrated the 100 days of the Biden-Harris Administration this week!

Thanks to your determination to save lives and livelihoods, Help Is Here to crush the virus: putting vaccines in people’s arms, money in people’s pockets, children safely back in school and people back in jobs.

In the American Rescue Plan, Democrats delivered key wins for our state.

To name a few, we secured over $42 billion in state and local relief to protect the jobs of our heroic frontline workers; more than $36 billion to keep our state moving forward with government assistance for education, transportation, childcare, and more; and $98 billion for money in the pockets of families in need. That’s about $175 billion so far.

We also reached the milestone of having administered 200 million shots in arms in under 100 days – far exceeding the initial goal of 100 million shots in 100 days!

Our work to strengthen California and meet the needs of the people is not done. Millions of American workers are out of a job while our infrastructure is crumbling. Now is the time for a once-in-a century investment to create millions of good-paying jobs, ensure Americans can compete with any country in the world, and pave the way for economic growth for decades to come! And we will do so by creating good-paying jobs as we save the planet!

Democrats are working hard to find bipartisan support for the American Jobs Plan. At the same time, the House Democratic Majority is taking bold action to defend California values For The People!

To address systematic racism and curb police brutality, we passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. I want to salute Congresswoman Karen Bass for her tremendous work. To honor George Floyd and everyone seeking justice and accountability, this bill must be enacted into law. Congresswoman Maxine Waters is helping enormously on that.

To end the epidemic of gun violence, we passed two commonsense gun violence prevention measures. To protect women and the LGTBQ community, we voted to reauthorize VAWA and passed the Equality Act, the Paycheck Fairness Act, and the Equal Rights Amendment led Congresswoman Jackie Speier!

To ensure that immigrants who make America more American can continue to enrich our Nation, we passed the Dream & Promise Act and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act under the leadership of our Chair of the California Delegation Zoe Lofgren.

To defend our voices at the ballot box from Republican voter suppression, we passed the For The People Act! And much more will be accomplished!

From devastating wildfires to the worst pandemic in a century, our state has faced an unprecedented series of crises. But California is strong! Our principles inspire us to lift each other up and fight for the most vulnerable.

You know what we say: we don’t agonize, we organize!

With your persistent mobilization and with the leadership of Governor Gavin Newsom and Chair Rusty Hicks, we will continue strengthening our state!

We will protect our House Majority by re-electing Mike Levin, Josh Harder and Katie Porter and re-elect Senator Alex Padilla!

Led by President Joe Biden – and California’s own Vice President Kamala Harris – we will Build Back Better and fully renew the soul of our country.

God bless you all, God bless California, and God bless the United States of America! Best wishes for a successful convention.

Thank you all very much!
