On MLK weekend three years ago, thousands across the country took Our First Stand to Save Health Care – vowing to defeat the Republican special interest agenda. With the unity of Democrats and the ferocious mobilization of the grassroots, we won the House and succeeded in protecting our care.
Three years later, the battle remains. Moscow Mitch and Republicans are still plotting ways to undermine our values, distract us from their quest to destroy the protections of people with pre-existing conditions and cover up the GOP corruption inspired by Trump.
Guided by Dr. King’s vision of a better tomorrow, however – and with the strength of our diversity and power of our unity – we will continue fighting For The People. Today in San Francisco before hundreds of #CA12 activists ready organize in 2020, Speaker Pelosi underscored that commitment:
ON DEFENDING OUR DEMOCRACY AND ROOTING OUT THE CULTURE OF CORRUPTION IN WASHINGTON:
“When we talk about the impeachment, this is a sad occasion for our country. I wish we didn’t have to do that. I wish the president’s behavior did not warrant it – but it did.“In the early days of the Revolution – before we were even a country, early days of the Revolution – Thomas Paine said: ‘The times have found us.’ The times found them to declare independence, to fight a war and win, to write our founding documents. Their vision is what is being compromised by what is happening in the White House today. And so, we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. The republic, not the monarchy.”
ON KEEPING OUR PROMISES AND DELIVERING MEANINGFUL PROGRESS FOR THE PEOPLE:
“We promised in our campaign, [that] we would lower the cost of health care. Then we passed HR3 to do just that… “We’re going to increase paychecks by building the infrastructure of America and to do so in a green way to fight [and] to deal with the climate crisis and that is exactly what we intend to do. And third, by removing the venom of dark special interest money, we passed HR1 to that and we are gonna fight that fight.“We sent 400 bills – 275 of them bipartisan pieces of legislation – to the Senate. The Grim Reaper said he’s going to bury them. The public will weigh in when we make these issues too hot to handle.”
ON THE 2020 ELECTION:
“You are in the arena. You have to be able to take a punch; you have to be able to throw a punch – for the children.
“What is truly important is that we expand the House, take back the Senate, and it is absolutely critical that we elect a Democratic President of the United States. Are you ready for that? Are you ready to organize? Do you believe the times have found you? Thank you. God bless you; God bless America!”
