Washington, D.C. — House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement after Sylvia Garcia in TX-29 and Veronica Escobar in TX-16 won the Democratic nomination in their districts.
“Last night, the Lone Star State moved a step closer to making history after two strong Latinas won the Democratic nomination in districts 16 and 29, clearing their paths to becoming the first Latinas ever elected to the U.S. Congress from Texas.
“Veronica embodies the values that unite us as a party. As a fighter for hard-working El Pasoans, Veronica will continue standing up for justice in the face of corruption, work to expand access to health care and protect border communities from Trump’s constant threats.
“Adding to her strong record in the Texas Legislature, State Senator Sylvia Garcia will be a steadfast advocate for immigrants, seniors, women’s health and veterans — continuing the legacy of Congressman Gene Green.
“We look forward to fighting for A Better Deal and against the special interest Republican policies alongside these battle-tested champions in the Congress of the United States.”
